Welcome!
In English Language Arts your child will continue to develop foundational skills for reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Built upon the Science of Reading, students will develop deep content knowledge using essential domains in literature, world and American history, and the sciences. Additionally, students will receive explicit phonics-based spelling instruction.
In math, your child will need to demonstrate mastery of basic facts and apply that knowledge to other areas of study. We move away from basic understanding to application of previously learned concepts. We focus on understanding fractions and decimals, area and perimeter of two and three-dimensional figures, and problem-solving. Throughout all units of study we use the skills of good mathematicians such as, being precise, using appropriate tools, and working diligently on tasks.
In science, your child will learn concepts as they relate to physical, earth, and life science. This will include exploring units about our Earth and Sun, Living Systems, and Mixtures and Solutions.
In social studies, your child will identify and explain basic historical facts about the development and growth of the United States. Students will develop maps, charts and graphs to illustrate specific features of the U.S.
During fifth grade your child will participate in many special events. These may include:
- Community service at Potawatomi State Park
- Phuture Phoenix program at UWGB
- Leadership opportunities
- Various recreational opportunities
